There has been a Census every 10 years in England and Wales since 1801, although in many cases Census Returns from 1801 – 1831 have not survived.

Sunday 7th April 1861

The following Census are subject to the 100 year closure rule
Sunday 19th June 1921
Sunday 26th April 1931 - destroyed during bombing in the Second World War
29th September 1939 - National Registration due to the Second World War
1941 - No Census due to the Second World War
Sunday 8th April 1951
Sunday 23rd April 1961
24th April 1966 - A 10% Sample of the population was taken
Sunday 25th April 1971
Sunday 5th April 1981
Sunday 21st April 1991
